Hello Hello!
We have had a wonderful start to our second week together! We had a chance to learn more about each other and have had a lot of lively discussions about how we want our class to work :) In math this week we introduced the Addition Dice Game. Rules for Addition Dice Game: Divide piece of paper in half. First player rolls two dice, and writes addition equation using the two numbers (2+4=6). Second player does the same, writing their equation on the other half of the paper. After 5 rounds, each player adds up the totals for their ultimate mega score :) Try playing the game with your student! (You can give them counters to use if they need help adding the larger numbers.) In writing we have been working on learning what what it means to be an author. Specifically, we have been talking about how during Writer's Workshop we write for the duration of the time (about 30 minutes.) You can talk to your student about how when he or she feels like they are done with their writing, they can add to the picture, add to the words, or start a new piece. This might be an interesting precedent to start doing at home as well. A number of you have expressed an interest in increasing your child's independence when working at home. Setting up a time during the day for Writer's Workshop could be a good opportunity to build this autonomy. There are several interesting workshops coming up that could be very helpful to those of you looking for more support. Multi-sensory strategies to support reading and writing development- Thursday Sep. 5: 2-2:50 and Friday Sep. 6: 9:25-10:15-Becky Dawson-Marble Navigating the emotional waters of supporting learning at home- Monday Sep 9, 6:30 to 8:30- Ceci Hyoun More answers to questions that were raised at Jumpstart:
I also wanted to give you a heads up that we have been doing the MAP test this week in class and will continue with it next week. Because of this, our project will officially start September 9th. If you are wanting to get started early, reading biographies of people from "long ago" and talking about the similarities and differences would be an excellent entry point. Looking forward to another great week with your kiddos! -Robin Comments are closed.
