Hello Hello!
We have had a wonderful start to our second week together! We had a chance to learn more about each other and have had a lot of lively discussions about how we want our class to work :) In math this week we introduced the Addition Dice Game. Rules for Addition Dice Game: Divide piece of paper in half. First player rolls two dice, and writes addition equation using the two numbers (2+4=6). Second player does the same, writing their equation on the other half of the paper. After 5 rounds, each player adds up the totals for their ultimate mega score :) Try playing the game with your student! (You can give them counters to use if they need help adding the larger numbers.) In writing we have been working on learning what what it means to be an author. Specifically, we have been talking about how during Writer's Workshop we write for the duration of the time (about 30 minutes.) You can talk to your student about how when he or she feels like they are done with their writing, they can add to the picture, add to the words, or start a new piece. This might be an interesting precedent to start doing at home as well. A number of you have expressed an interest in increasing your child's independence when working at home. Setting up a time during the day for Writer's Workshop could be a good opportunity to build this autonomy. There are several interesting workshops coming up that could be very helpful to those of you looking for more support. Multi-sensory strategies to support reading and writing development- Thursday Sep. 5: 2-2:50 and Friday Sep. 6: 9:25-10:15-Becky Dawson-Marble Navigating the emotional waters of supporting learning at home- Monday Sep 9, 6:30 to 8:30- Ceci Hyoun More answers to questions that were raised at Jumpstart:
I also wanted to give you a heads up that we have been doing the MAP test this week in class and will continue with it next week. Because of this, our project will officially start September 9th. If you are wanting to get started early, reading biographies of people from "long ago" and talking about the similarities and differences would be an excellent entry point. Looking forward to another great week with your kiddos! -Robin Hi Core 2 Families!
I had the best time meeting all of my students and their families on the first day of school! Your children are lovely and this is going to be a great year! I wanted to update you on a few items of business that we discussed at the Parent Meeting and let you in on what we will be covering the rest of this week in class :) I have continued to work on the Resources section of my Digital Portfolio. I made the decision to link to the Parent Educator Resource Binder that Kaitlin had already downloaded onto her DP. Please let me know if there are any problems accessing it. If you are looking for ideas for lessons to do at home, please take some time to explore the graphic organizers found on this link (there are a lot!) I will be giving more specific ideas of which ones are useful for specific Learning Plans, but you might get some ideas of your own while perusing them. I am still working on when the Learning Plan meetings will be held, I will update you on that soon :) I am also working on getting my hands on some Work Journal Exemplars for new families (or continuing families) to take a look at. Those will be up soon as well. This week we will continue working on building community in the classroom, along with learning how to take care of each other and our classroom. If you are looking for ideas of what to do at home with your child, I would suggest looking at the Parent Educator Resource Binder under "Various Graphic Organizers." You will find a few G.O's that focus on Topic and Details that could be used after reading a book and discussing what the main ideas and details are in the story. In math we are going to be playing simple games using ten frames, feel free to come by and check them out (they would be easy to make at home). As always, these ideas are in no way mandatory, they are provided for the families that are wanting more support for their home lessons. See all of you soon! Robin |
