Welcome Back!
I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break! I loved getting a chance to see quite a few of you at the Work Journal Meeting on Tuesday. Don’t forget to come on Thursday from 3:15-4:15, if you were unable to make it on Tuesday. We have begun our new project, The Cloud Appreciation Society! I will upload the project outline under “Learning Goals.” I will be talking in more detail about this at the Work Journal Meeting, but be sure to take a look so that you know what we are working on in class! I shared an example of the types of word problems we are doing in math lately at the Work Journal Meeting. We are going to be focusing on building and applying base ten number understanding. One of the main books that I turn to for help in writing appropriate word problems is a book called, “ Children’s Mathematics, Cognitively Guided Instruction,” by Thomas Carpenter. I highly recommend this book, and I am going to quote a short passage regarding base ten understanding and word problems: “The fundamental context for developing this notion of grouping by ten is found in multiplication and measurement division situations…What is unique about problems that develop base-ten ideas is that objects are collected into groups of ten. This allows children to use principles of the base ten number system to solve them.” Here are some of the example problems that they give in the book to help students develop base ten understanding: Our class has 5 boxes of doughnuts. There are 10 doughnuts in each box. We also have 3 extra doughnuts. How many doughnuts do we have all together? Jim picked 54 flowers. He put them into bunches with 10 flowers in each bunch. How many bunches of flowers did Jim make? You can adjust the size of the number to suit your child, but make sure that the groups are of 10 or 100. I am looking forward to an awesome 2 months with your kiddos! Have a great week! |
